Only an active roster with a set number of slots is allowed to play in MLB games. Promotion to this slot is called a Call-Up, and a September Call-Up allows a player to be on the active roster. Minor contract players have no chance of making the active roster unless they are in this 40 roster. Players in the 40 roster who are not included in the 40 roster will play in the minor leagues with players outside the 40 roster for adjustment and official competition, and will be replaced by players in the 40 roster in an attempt to advance to the majors.

※A roster in MLB refers to the number of players on a team's roster who are eligible to play in the team's official games. There are two types of quotas: a set quota and a 40 quota.
